The living and the dead…

URBAN DEAD!

Since I’ve been at university this year, I have been introduced to a game called Urban dead which is a browser based MMORPG (massively multi online role playing game) which is based in a City called Malton that has been overrun with zombies and trapped civilians have to survive making their way through ruined buildings and rubble to try and rebuild what is left of the devastated city.

Urban dead can be played by anyone and is free, all you need is the internet. The game uses a very basic text and picture style of game play and captures the imagination of every player . The creators provided the online game and the players have turned it into something else, every character in the game has their own story which can be customized to how you want. The idea is you create your own character, give them a name and raise the level of your character by gaining experience points which allows you to purchase different skills. This then helps you attack the opposing side with greater force and accuracy. In the game you can obtain many different types of items to help you along the way which will help you along in the future. Many players have form their own groups who help out other players and attack zombie hordes on a much greater scale but there are also players who dedicate themselves to healing injured players, there are so many possibilities. There are a few players in the game who go around killing other players these people are called “PKers (people killers)” these people you should be weary of.

This game is a good example of a community which is gradually getting bigger by the day it’s a way for people to interact together to create a society which captures the imagination of everyone. It’s a never ending game as long as there are players the game will never end.

The mobile phone

Today mobile phones are one of the most important technological advancements in the last 10 years. For many people it is essential to own a mobile phone but there is a small minority that don’t own one. Since they were invented in the 1940’s they were pretty much the size of a brick but as time went by technology has got more advanced, thus mobile phones have got smaller in size and are capable of do pretty much anything you want. Today phones are the same size or smaller than the average chocolate bar, and are capable of taking multiple pictures and videos. Most mobile phones these days have a minimum of a 1.3 mega pixel camera but there are some that have a 5 mega pixel camera this has only happened in the last 3 years or so. The boom in the technology industry has made mobile phones also capable of, playing music, inter changeable memory cards, Bluetooth (one of the most popular and successful applications for mobile to date), pc connectivity, synchronisation and fully customised themes. This is just a portion of things you can do with today’s mobile phones.

One of the main things that have stayed the same for the last 10 years is “SMS” which means short message service, this enables the user to write a small message and send it to a desired number and the message will show up on the phone at the receiving end. This service used to be free until companies realised they could make a lot of money out of this which they did!

Later on they thought, hmm how could we utilise this even more to our advantage? Well they came up with the idea of not only sending a text message but actually sending a picture along with a bit of text as well which they could charge a bit more money for. But there was a slight flaw in this as if you wanted to receive the image you had to ring your service provider and get SMS picture messaging activated which cost you even more money. Don’t get me wrong I love texting but I find it so much easier if I just rung the person up instead.

1st Generation

The first generation phones were the first mobile phones to be released to the Public, they used analogue circuit-switched technology with FDMA (Frequency Division Multiple Access). These mobile phones were very unreliable, had poor voice quality and had very poor security.

2nd Generation

The second generation of phones scrapped the analogue idea and began using Digital displays for the first time. There was a high demand for these “new” mobile phones and companies had to come up with new ideas to handle the demands on the network especially in populated cities like London. This is where text messaging was introduced and has been popular ever since. Also caller identity was introduced to recognise who is calling you.

2.5 Generation

This generation of phones was just an enhanced version of the 2nd gen phones but with more applications they were also the start of full color screens and provided better services which enabled some of the 2.5 gen phones to support web browsing, animated navigational maps and voice mail.

3rd Generation

The 3rd generation phones are the latest to date. They have a better data transfer rate and offer a larger capacity of space for music, photos and videos, if you sign up to 3 network you are able to watch TV, download music videos and surf the net for free as part of a package deal but this can be done on all mobiles just not as extensively. I forgot to mention that this generation of mobiles have advanced cameras built in for example the k800i has a flash and optical zoom which didn’t appear in the older generation this just shows how fast technology has come. Most of the 3rd gen phones support dual band, tri band and quad band which means the phone can be used in a different country if you travel abroad. There is a lot more things that the 3r gen phones can do but this is just a rough outline of the major aspects.

4th Generation

This generation of phones are still in development but will be designed to feature WIFI and will have an even faster data transfer rate of 200mbps they will also contain a Tv.

Few articles I found interesting.

So this is pretty much all I have to say about this, I hope some of this information will be of use to you

Thanks

Technology's The way

Hey there

I just recently came back from a computer fair in croydon it was interesting to see where computer technology is at these days, while wandering around looking at all the new interesting gadgets i noticed how much cheaper it is to buy a twice as decent pc with vista than it would have been 2 years ago. its amazing how far technology has come especially for computers its been just under 60 years since the first commercial pc was built back in 1945 in america, the computer was so big it was the size of a large room.Thats an extremely big difference from todays standard computers which are in tiny towers that can hold Gigabites of storage space and Dual,Quad core processors. Computer technology is rapidly increasing everyday, a computers life line for todays typical user is about 4/5 mabe even 6 years but for people who play Games want the best expearience possible and because of the rapid increase in technology, a New top of the range graphics card is produced every couple of months so give it a year or 2 and your computer will be out of date but this is mainly a concern for the people who love speed and graphics.

I continued looking around the fair and spotted an 8 mega pixel webcam for £20 and i thought that was a proper good deal especially for the price and especially because it was 8 mega pixels. This is another good example of how fast technology is progressing, only last year 1.3 mega pixel webcams were top of the range.

its going to be hard to come up with a good effective idea for this project just because of the speed of development and trying to find something that hasnt already been done. i have come up with a few ideas here is a quick list.

1.Mobile application to unlock your car and get the heater/air conditioning blowing befor you even set foot in the car.

2. Sky recorder on your mobile, i thought its was a brilliant idea but ive herd its already been done by sky so i thought id add it in anyway. basically it enables you to text in to sky and it will make your sky box record a specific programe at any time.

3. Drinks mixer, i think this would be very popular in people who like to party and go out drinking, the way this would work is if you had an online database which you could access from your mobile phones to find out which drinks can be mixed together and also post your own good mixes for people to try out.

4.Petrol pricer, this one would be quite difficult because there are many websites already offereing you the cheapest place to buy petrol, i thought this would be a gd idea because they havnt produced one for your mobile yet.

5.Wii remote, this would be a quality idea but is a very difficult one. having the right software in a mobile would be the main problem as some mobile phones dont have the correct hardware like the older generation of phones.

6.route finder, i think this would be a top choice because i personally know how anoying it is when i dont know where a place is and i dont have access to a computer, so i think this would be one of my top choices.

7, Party application, this would be a simple application which would turn your phone into a mobile disco, with your light actin as a strobe light adjusting the different settings to speed up or slow down the flash rate, plus while you play a song your phone lights up to the beat, this idea has already been tried by nokia with the nokia 3220, but with some work this could be turned into something even better.

To be honest i think that is it for my ideas at the moment please if u have any questions or idea please let me know:)

Thanx rich

Online gaming a world of its own…
If you haven’t noticed since the release of the “next gen” consoles there is a rise in online gaming around the world, online gaming is pretty much standard in all games for consoles mainly the Xbox 360 and the ps3. Not so much the Nintendo wii because it is mainly aimed at bringing the family together in the same room rather than across a virtual community but as technology is getting more advanced this is beginning to change. Now online gaming is pretty much a life of its own, a good example of this is “second life”. What is second life I here you say? well Second Life is a 3-D virtual world entirely created by its Residents. Since opening to the public in 2003, it has grown exponentially and today is inhabited by millions of Residents from around the globe. Second life is so popular companies from all around the world are taking advantage of this to sell their products online. You can start your own business and become very successful and earn lots of “real” money or go bankrupt but still have your dignity.

Here is an introduction for second life

Not only is second life pretty much “A second life” you can make Real money from it. By obtaining money called the Linden dollar, this money can be converted to real us dollars. Which in my eyes is pretty cool, making money while playing a game. In this game anything is possible creations are limitless. In my eyes this game has broken the boundaries of online gaming and brought us to a new level!
